What about the weather in Peru and when is the best time to travel?

We often get questions about the weather and climate in Peru and what is the best time to travel to Peru.

Peru has a large number of different climate types. Roughly speaking, however, the country can be divided into a dry coastal strip in the west of the country, the Andes mountains in the middle of the country, and the rainforest in the east of the country.

Due to an interaction between the cold sea current of the Pacific Ocean and the Andes mountains, it rains very little on the coastal strip of Peru. There is also a dense fog for this coastal strip for a large part of the year. This fog is also known as la Garua. The metropolis of Lima, for example, is shrouded in mist for much of the year and often gives the beautiful city a gloomy impression. Some months of the year, from mid-December to mid-March, the sun’s rays overcome the fog, the temperature rises to about 30 degrees and the hearts of the Limeños, as the inhabitants of this town are called, knock harder. A large part of them can then be found on the beaches around the city.

In the Andes mountains, completely different climate laws apply. The western flanks of the Andes Mountains are dry and yellow, the eastern flanks, on the other hand, are much wetter and greener. In these eastern flanks, it can rain every now and then throughout the year, but most precipitation falls in the so-called rainy season, from mid-December to mid-March.

What many people don’t know is that about half of Peru consists of rainforests. As the name suggests, it rains a lot in the rainforest all year round. However, most precipitation also falls here in the rainy season.

The boy

The Little Boy (el Niño) is a phenomenon that takes place on average once every three to seven years and can seriously upset the above ‘laws’ regarding the weather. El Niño is the name that fishermen have given to this phenomenon and refers to the Christmas child because this natural phenomenon mainly occurs around this time of the year. Because during this period the coast will be confronted with a warm Gulf Stream instead of a cold Gulf Stream, it can actually rain heavily in the generally dry coastal area, sometimes resulting in landslides and mud slides. El Niño can also change the weather in the Andes Mountains and the rainforest, but often with less disastrous consequences than along the coast.

What is the best time to travel to Peru right now?

Most travelers will spend most of their trip in the highlands of the Andes Mountains. Highlights such as the former Inca city of Cusco, the Inca citadel Machu Picchu, but also the Colca Canyon, and Lake Titicaca are all located in the Andes Mountains. It is therefore advisable to travel during the dry season, from mid-March to mid-December. During the dry season, the weather is clear in the mountains, the light is wonderful for taking beautiful pictures. During the day the sun shines brightly and the summer clothes can be taken out. However, always take warm clothes with you during the day, because when the sun disappears behind the clouds, the temperature can drop quickly. At night it is often clear and the temperature can sometimes drop below freezing, the higher you are in the mountains,

Klimaat Amazone Peru

The temperature in the Amazon usually fluctuates around 30 °C during the day. At night it cools down to about 20 °C. So it doesn’t get really cold. Very occasionally, cold fronts cross the rainforest and it can also cool down during the day to 20 °C, for example.
Because it rains so often in the Amazon, the humidity level is very high. You perspire a lot (so drink well!) and everything feels clammy. It rains throughout the year in the rainforest, but during the rainy season (mid-December to mid-March) it rains more often.

Kleding Amazone Peru

It is wise to wear thin cotton pants with long legs and a thin cotton shirt with long sleeves in the rainforest. Insects are less likely to sting you this way and during walks in the dense forest, you are less bothered by sharp, protruding leaves and plants. Bring good (waterproof) shoes that can get dirty and, for example, sneakers that you can put on at the lodge. Rubber wellies are generally available at the lodges and come in handy when it rains or has rained very hard.

Muggen Amazone Peru

Mosquitoes are most active during twilight times (sunrise and sunset). At these times it is advisable to wear covering clothing and to rub yourself well with good DEET. All lodges have mosquito nets hanging over the beds to protect you from stinging insects at night.

Facilities lodge Amazone Peru

Electricity is usually available for a few hours a day at fixed times. Nowadays some lodges even have internet coverage, but it is often slow or even cuts out completely, so you better assume that you will be unreachable by phone and email during your stay in the rainforest.
They often cook what has a good shelf life or what is available in the Amazon Peru. Food is always included during a stay and the lodges usually work with a buffet. Coffee, tea, water and juices are freely available in the lodges, soft drinks and alcoholic drinks have to be paid for. If you want to eat or drink specific things, you must bring this yourself from ‘the civilized world’.

Handy to take with you to the Amazon Peru

Don’t forget to bring a flashlight and enough batteries and some plastic bags to protect your belongings from the damp weather. A poncho or a raincoat can also come in handy.

If you are in Peru and you like wine, visit a wine farm.

Peru is not immediately known to many as a wine country, yet wine production in Peru has been on the rise in recent years. The best Peruvian wines come from the region around the city of Ica. If you are near this city, it is possible to visit a wine farm. During the visit, you will receive a tour and of course, you will also have the opportunity to taste. Did you know that Pisco (a Peruvian liqueur made from grapes) is also made on wine farms in this region? Pisco is the national drink of Peru and is part of the Pisco Sour cocktail.

Recipe for Pisco Sour for one person:

6 tablespoons Pisco
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons sugar syrup
1 tablespoon egg white
15 ice cubes
2 drops Angostura Bitters or Chuncho Bitters

Put the ice in a blender or cocktail shaker and then add all the liquid ingredients, except the Angostura. Grind it for 3 seconds or shake it for 8 seconds. Then pour it through a sieve into a glass. Then pour the drops of Angostura into the glass.

Tip: The wine farms are located outside the city of Ica and can only be visited by private transport. A tip is to have a private driver take you from Paracas to the Huacachina oasis after the excursion at the Ballestas Islands and to make a stopover at one of the wine farms. Some of the wine farms have a beautiful garden where you can have lunch.
