Jungle tour Iquitos 4D & 3N.

Jungle tour Iquitos
The Loreto region with its regional capital Iquitos is located in the northeast of Peru. The region can only be reached by boat or plane. The city of Iquitos is also known as the largest city in the world (almost half a million inhabitants) that cannot be reached by road. Close to Iquitos are the national parks Pacaya-Samiria and Allpahuayo-Mishana. Several rivers flow through the region, the most famous of which is the Amazon.

Animals that you can find in the rainforest are different types of monkeys and birds, tapirs, jaguars, pumas, giant otters, caimans and ‘last but not least’ the pink freshwater dolphin. In the Peruvian rainforest the freshwater dolphin only lives in this area, so if you want to spot freshwater dolphin in Peru, you have to come to this region!
It is possible to extend the jungle tour Iquitos with a stay of one or more days in the city of Iquitos.

Heliconia Amazon Lodge
You will stay during the jungle tour Iquitos in the Heliconia Amazon Lodge. This jungle lodge is named after a tropical flower that grows in this area. The Heliconia Amazon Lodge is a beautiful accommodation located on the banks of the majestic Amazon River.

Please note: The travel description of the jungle tour Iquitos is an example of what staying in the jungle of Peru can look like. However, no rights can be derived from this.

NB: If you have the time, we recommend a 4-day stay. However, it is also possible to go to the Heliconia Amazon Lodge for 3 days. Day 3 from the description will then be omitted.

Then you will be taken to the port of Iquitos. With a speedboat you will sail to the Heliconia Amazon Lodge. At the lodge you will be welcomed with an exotic drink. After you have checked in, you will all have lunch.

In the afternoon you will make a first excursion through the primary rainforest. Together with the guide you will make a walk of about 2 hours in the Yanamono Reserve. The guide will show you various (medicinal) plants, large trees such as the kapok tree and the Heliconia flower. Early in the morning, birds are best spotted. You will therefore get up early and go with your guide by boat in the tributaries of the Amazon River in search of birds such as the American giant kingfisher, the wattled jacana, and the black-collared hawk.
After breakfast, you will sail to a local Yaguas community. Here you will get an idea of how people live there. After lunch at the lodge, you will sail to one of the tributaries of the Amazon and you can fish for piranhas if you want. You will also go with your guide in search of freshwater dolphins and with a bit of luck you will encounter them, which can be a great experience.

During our visit to the rainforest here in September 2018, we were lucky enough to spot groups of freshwater dolphins several times. At one point, our boat was even surrounded by a group of dolphins and it seemed like they were playing with us! Taking pictures is very difficult, because you don't know in advance where they will surface and the moments are very short. The freshwater dolphins really made contact with us, seemed to communicate with us. It was an experience never to forget!

In the evening you will take a walk through the forest. Especially at night many animals are active in the rainforest. Together with your guide you will look for tarantulas, tree frogs, fireflies, bats and other animals that are mainly active at night.

Day 03

Day 3

After breakfast, you will sail with your guide to Yanamono Island in the lake of the same name to see the 'Victoria Regia', the queen of the giant water lilies. These water lilies can grow up to 40 centimeters in diameter. The first night the lilies bloom, they are white and then they turn pink. The leaves of these water lilies are enormous.

In the afternoon you are free in the lodge. In consultation with the guide you decide what you are going to do. It is possible to visit a local farming family with a local distillery where sugar cane is distilled together with your guide.

Day 04

Day 4

In the morning, after breakfast, you have the opportunity to paddle along the Amazon River or one of its tributaries with your guide. The perfect way to see the wildlife close to the banks from the water. After lunch, you will be taken back to the city of Iquitos by speedboat and your jungle tour Iquitos ends.
