The highlight of the excursion is the turquoise lake of Llanganuco, a beautiful mountain lake enclosed by mountain ranges. You start – and end this excursion in the city of Huaraz.
During this excursion you will drive from the city of Huaraz through the beautiful valley Callejon de Huaylas in the Huascaran National Park where you will also see the peaks of the mountain of the same name. This mountain in the Huascaran National Park is with 6768 meters the highest mountain in Peru.
You will make a short visit to the town of Carhuaz, which has a beautiful central square (Plaza de Armas). Then you will visit the town of Yungay. This town was completely destroyed by an avalanche of rubble during the tragic earthquake of 1970. The site of the earthquake is marked by a large statue of Christ. Only the top of the cathedral on the then central square and the tops of some former palm trees still emerge above the rubble. A large number of the town's inhabitants were buried alive and in total around 50,000 people died during this earthquake.
Finally, you will visit Lake Chinacocha, better known as Lake Llanganuco. On this beautiful turquoise mountain lake, wedged between surrounding mountain ranges, it is possible to take a boat trip (optional).
If time permits, it is possible to make a short visit to the town of Tarica, a town known for its locally made handicrafts. You will end this tour to Huascaran National Park back in the city of Huaraz.
