Northern Peru with Trujillo and Chachapoyas
This part is known for its well-preserved archaeological sites and interesting museums of various pre-Inca cultures. But also impressive nature, beautiful mountain walks and access to the jungle.
Trujillo has an attractive colonial city centre. Around this city are interesting archaeological sites such as the Chimu mud city of Chan Chan. The Moche and Chimu, two pre-Inca cultures, have had a great influence in this area. The beaches of Huanchaco, half an hour’s drive from Trujillo, are ideal for relaxation. Local fishermen still fish here with the reed boats (totoras), which were also used long ago. The city of Chiclayo itself may not have much to offer, but the surroundings certainly do. Various archaeological pre-Inca sites and a number of very interesting museums are more than worth a visit here. See this in combination with the beautiful walks at Chachapoyas where the climate is wonderful. Then also into the mountains for mighty glaciers and lakes at Huaraz. Finally, a visit to the Amazon and you will understand that this is a complete 3-week trip!
